This report was prepared through a collaboration between the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications and the University of California, Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. UF Dean Hub Brown and Berkeley Dean Geeta Anand worked together to conceptualize this effort, which included a survey of journalism programs, a convening of deans to discuss collaboration opportunities, a letter signed by 25 deans supporting collaboration and the preparation of this report.
The MacArthur Foundation and the Knight Foundation supported the concept for this work and provided important feedback. The MacArthur Foundation provided financial support that enabled the effort.
As befitting the subject matter, preparing this report drew heavily on the talents of students at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications (CJC).
Students in The Agency, CJC’s immersive experience for advertising students, designed the website and report PDF and developed the branding and marketing plan. The student team was led by Valentina Scarduelli, a senior majoring in advertising. Scarduelli will graduate in August 2024. The students worked under the supervision of Mark Rottensteiner, accounts director of The Agency.
More than 30 deans, faculty members and industry professionals generously shared their experiences and ideas in interviews for this report:

We also drew considerable perspective by attending the Statehouse Reporting Conference at the University of Missouri in September 2023. The conference, organized by the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism and the University of Vermont’s Center for Community News, drew 30 journalism faculty members from programs across the country interested in building successful statehouse coverage initiatives.
